Dynamic Warm-Up- The New Way to Stretch

Published On: November 16, 2009, in News, Fitness, News, Videos No Comments

You are told to stretch, stretch, stretch-but what is the best way?  The classic is a 039#hold for 30 seconds, repeat 3 times.039#  However, this type of stretching is not the best for the athletic or more active population.

At Excel, we are finding much more success teaching an Active Dynamic Warm-up that uses Dynamic Stretching versus passive stretching.  What039#s the difference?  In a sustained stretch one is looking to change muscle length/stiffness – not the most appropriate technique before running!  Dynamic stretches, on the other hand, contract a muscle throughout its range while challenging the neuromuscular system. Basically, you are performing your warm-up and sport-specific stretching at the same time.

These movements make  your warm-ups  far more effective and primes you for running. It is also far less time consuming and helps prevent injuries.

Below are some examples of dynamic stretches demonstrated by Excel Therapist Cam McCormack, PT, MSPT.

In this video, Cam shows us the proper technique for the dynamic stretch “forward lunge to instep” from the side view.

This is the “forward lunge to instep” from the front view.
